Frustrations inspire drink bottle business

I never planned to start a drink bottle business.

I was a mum to a newborn and a toddler, juggling marketing and operations work, trying to fit movement and a real life into the gaps. The one thing I needed every day was a decent drink bottle. The kind that didn't leak in my bag, didn't grow mould in the straw, didn't need two hands to operate while I was holding a baby or a coffee or a laptop.

All other bottles let me down somewhere that actually mattered.

So I went looking for something better and I found a drink bottle design that genuinely solved the things I cared about:

  • A wide opening that's easy to clean
  • Astraw that delivers a real gulp instead of a trickle
  • A click-locking lid that stays sealed in a bag
  • A handle shaped to the way your hand actually holds something
  • Indents on the body so you can carry a near-1L bottle without two hands.
  • A bottle engineered ergonomically from handle to lip contact.

I named it Mode & Opal because it had to look beautiful and feel premium. People shouldn't have to choose between style and function. They should get both.

We launched in late 2025 and we're stocked across New Zealand at Bear & Moo, Little Mash Boutique, Coach Steph and Fat Rabbit.

But the proof I'm most proud of sits in the daily messages. A matrescence practitioner whose son took his first sip and pulled a face like "WOAH."

A customer who bought a second bottle so her husband would stop stealing hers. People who tell us they're drinking more water without trying, and without thinking about it. People who came in expecting just another drink bottle and were genuinely surprised.
